Dieu aux bois de cerf, le Cernunnos celtique est attesté par une dizaine de représentations figurées et une unique inscription gallo-romaine conservée au musée de Cluny et dans laquelle le C initial est restitué. La traduction usuelle du théonyme est «(dieu) cornu», mais il n’est pas certain, compte tenu des noms celtiques de la «corne» (gallois carn , breton karn ), qu’elle soit exacte. Le thème kern- désigne en celtique expressément le sommet de la tête et il s’apparente aux mots indo-européens désignant des bêtes à corne en général et le cerf en particulier.

La représentation, sur une plaque du chaudron de Gundestrup, du dieu aux bois de cerf, assis dans la posture «bouddhique», tenant le torque d’une main, un serpent de l’autre, et entouré d’animaux, dont un cerf, laisserait à penser que Cernunnos est le Jupiter gaulois dans l’aspect de maître des animaux.
